EAWAG - sustainable building ideas
EAWAG - sustainable building ideas apr 15, 2012

The Zentrum Chriesbach was inaugurated in 2006 and offers a new perspective in terms of sustainable office buildings. Most of the energy targets have been met.

Key features:
- Chimney effect in the atrium to cool the building overnight in the summer. This ventilation, combined with air supplied from an earth-to-air heat exchanger, means that air-conditioning is not required for the office rooms
- Movable reflecting glass panels to diverge the sun in summer and harvest sun during the winter months
- Photovoltaics covering 1/3 of the energy demand
- Top insulation in combination with heat exchange aeration system, there is only a marginal heating or cooling necessary
- Green-Roof, good water harvest (used for toilets)
- NoMix Toilets separate collection of urine, citric acid is used once in a while for cleaning
- Sustainable building materials (recycling concrete, office walls made by wood/clay constructions, little use of colors)
- Gout Mieux Canteen
- Vacuum-Tube Collectors for water heating on the roof
- Rain water from around the building area is collected on a percolation ground, the idea is to bring the water to the soil and not to the sewage treating plant
- Lighing system controlled by sensors
- Cables and pipes are not concealed, cost saving
